Chapter One: I Am Born

Steven R. Boyett was born in Atlanta, Georgia, grew up all over Florida, and attended the University of Tampa on a writing scholarship before quitting to write his first novel, Ariel, when he was nineteen. He is currently writing a sequel, Eloi.

Boyett's second novel, the incomplete The Architect of Sleep, was begun in 1983 while working for the History and English Departments at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Go West, Young Man

In 1984 Boyett moved from Florida to Los Angeles, California, where he continued to write fiction and screenplays as well as teach college writing courses, seminars, and workshops. He has published stories in literary, science fiction, fantasy, and horror anthologies and magazines, as well as publishing articles and comic books. In the early 90s his imprint Sneaker Press published chapbooks by the poets Carrie Etter and the late Nancy Lambert.

A Credit to His Name

In 1997 Boyett was hired by Pixar/Disney to write the second draft of Toy Story 2. Just because his name ain't on it doesn't mean he didn't write it. If you liked it, you're welcome. He still hasn't seen it, and in fact wouldn't see a Disney or Pixar movie even if it were THE STEVEN R. BOYETT STORY.

But Wait—There's More!

Boyett earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do at 16 and also practiced Aikido for several years. He has been a professional paper marbler, and for several years co-owned and operated a booth at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Northern and Southern California. It was more fun than any human being should be allowed to have.

Now What Would You Pay?

In 2000 Boyett took some time off from writing. He took up yoga, learned to play the didgeridoo, started composing electronic music, and produced two CDs' worth of music best described as “well-intentioned.” Somehow during this writing hiatus he wrote a novel (about God, the ultimate entheogen, and the Hollywood club scene) also best described as “well- intentioned.”

Boyett's increasing passion for electronic dance music led to learning how to DJ, and for the last several years he has played his own unique brand of New Old Funk at clubs, conventions, parties, Burning Man, and sporting events. He has three of the world's most popular music podcasts: Groovelectric (dance mixes of what he calls New Old Funk), Podrunner (fixed-BPM workout music mixes), and Podrunner: Intervals (varied-BPM workout music mixes.

In the last few years Boyett has started to like Building Things.
