I Leave L.A.

Sunset Boulevard?  We leave it! Santa Monica Boulevard?  We leave it! (apologies to Randy Newman)

So I’m here in my new office in the East San Francisco Bay on a rainy gray morning surrounded by stuff that needs to be put away. I am using my wife’s Veriszon wireless card because, a week after we moved in, ATT still lacks the technical ability to turn on my new DSL line despite the fact that I was able to tap into the outgoing resident’s line for two days when we arrived here. Since it is clear that ATT could not pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel, I am terminating all my service with them and going with, god help me, Comcast.

The move went amazingly smoothly, with crews of friends and neighbors on both ends who worked like pack mules and got us packed up and unloaded in record time. I can’t thank everybody enough.

We’re still setting up here (we will be for months), and I haven’t gotten back into the swing of writing and DJing. But I will on Monday, because I’m fond of little luxuries such as eating and electricity.

I’ll be back to proper posting soon as well. Meantime, here’s a parting image from Moving Day that says why I left Los Angeles better than anything I could write (compliments of Adrian Smith).

  1. Okay this struck me as very funny, “Since it is clear that ATT could not pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel”. Probably as much for the image as because I call AT&T every month with issues on my bill; which it takes two months to straighten out, so this month’s issues started two months ago and last months will be dealt with next month. Aaargh.

  2. I’ve had Comcast for high speed internet access for a while now. The previous incarnation of the franchise here in Livenomore had made the leap and installed the fiber network. We gave up cable television in mid-2009 and haven’t missed it as much as one would imagine. Well, at least I miss Turner Classic Movies… But as for Comcast and internet service, it has been pretty rock solid reliable. In 5 plus years at the current address, I can count the number of outages on one hand. Here’s hoping that you have similar good fortune.

  3. I wish there were more choices here in the East Bay hinterlands, but that’s the price one pays for removing oneself from civilization. I’ve read a lot of dodgy things about Comcast, but seriously, how could they be worse than AT&T. I’ve tried to call three times now to cancel my service and been unable to get through. Good god.

Glad to hear you’re happy with them, Roger! I wish we had fiber optic here. Wahh. Wahh. Wahh.

  4. Oh my gosh – That poor truck. It looks like you are a master “stacker”. That’s what my husband calls me. A “Stacker”. I stack papers, books, junk – everything has a stack. I’ve just never seen anyone do it with a truck. lol.

I’ve never had AT&T…but thanks for the heads up. I’ve had my problems with Comcast and Verizon…but Verizon has been the best with their Fios option. But that’s up here in Oregon. We had a lot of up and down with Comcast. My real consensus is that all Internet and phone companies have major customer service problems. We all just end up hopping from one to the next…hoping the next option will turn out better. It’s all great until something goes down or the bill is wrong…then out comes the monster as you have to go through the endless phone trees, hangups and frustration…to the point that you just tell them to turn the thing off and you are seeking another company for service. Been there done that lol.

Take care and wishing you the best on getting settled.

    1. That wasn’t our truck, good lord! That was a pickup truck that was collecting discarded mattresses, which is the best explanation I can give for why I wanted the hell out of there. We had the biggest U-Haul truck we could rent and a trailer. 🙂

      Happy with Comcast so far!
